Dead or Worse

Filed under: comics, writing, crazy guy, news — Brendan @ 6:32 pm

There’s an important announcement up:

SEPTEMBER 23 2008, 2:43PM

There’s danger behind every door, over every hill, on every grim face. In a place that’s half real and half legend, these wretches do what they must to carve out lives in a time when the only choice is to step on others, or be walked on yourself. Every face and every scar has a story if you can stand to look. The lucky die, for the rest, there’s worse.

Watch this space, because artist LUIS BOISVERT and writer BRENDAN PEVERIL are bringing the fucking noise very soon.

LUIS BOISVERT has been a fixture in the local comics scene for years both as an artist and a writer. His fledgeling efforts at both webcomics and self publishing have met with universal praise and brought him no small amount of recognition. After years of honing his craft, the antediluvian art of drawing tits and violence, he’s ready to change the landscape of online comics with his most ambitious project to date.

BRENDAN PEVERIL has been an Internet dirtbag since before you knew what an Internet was. His exploits are many, and though his name may not be a household one, important men grow quiet when he enters a room. He’s dabbled in many things, fiction, comic writing, journalism, blogging, but always with an intensity that usually escapes a mere dilettante. You may not know him now, but you will, and by then it might be too late.

DEAD OR WORSE debuts MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD, 2008.

nailed it!

Filed under: writing, pieces — Brendan @ 7:14 pm

So, yeah, I’m just going to start updating this thing something like regularly again like nothing happened. Deal.

The novel seemed too heavy today, so I finally addressed some of the problems editors have had with New Stories. While I kind of miss the ultra sleek 2000 word version that nobody thought made any sense, I’ve added 700 tight words onto the 5000 words version I’ve been shopping around, and, I have to say, the whole thing flows much better than I thought it would. I wish I could just pop this fucker right into my novel.

I don’t want to put the whole thing up right now, since that makes it a little harder to get published later. Hit the cut to see an excerpt, and if you want to read the whole thing, ask and I’ll probably send it to you.

not drunk yet

Filed under: writing, for screen, crazy guy, news, disorganized mess — Brendan @ 7:19 pm

So, I’ve been doing this for a year, right? Well, it hasn’t been the best year of my life, but it was better than 2006, I guess. Rather than dwelling on that shit, though, I’m looking forward to 2008. You see, I’ve been taking it easy on the writing for the past couple of weeks, and conducting business. Let me tell you about it.

First off, the ironic bit. I go back home from LA to discover that I’ve got film contacts. Early in this new year I’m going to write something, we’re leaning toward a nasty little horror/black comedy. More on that as it develops.

The novel is still underway. I’ve had time to really discuss it with my co-writer, and it’s big, it’s good, and it actually feels like a real thing that I’m working on. It’s still a lot of work, but once I stop feeling so burnt out and I get back into the swing of writing, it really shouldn’t be too long before it’s written and being shipped to agents.

Comics. I’m starting to rethink A Deeper Shade of Gone, just because I’ve found it nearly impossible to get anyone else to be interested in that. I have, however, found somebody who wants to publish comics but doesn’t really draw or write them, so we’re discussing starting a label. We’ll see how that goes. I’ve got three reasonably large projects in various stages to launch this thing with, so I’ll be working my ass off on those. They’ve even got artists on board! Huzzah! Hopefully before 2009 you’ll all get to hold in your hands the first Peveril brothers’ (all three, not just Shamus and I) joint project. The brother gimmick works, so we figure we should take advantage.

As always, I’m still producing the short fiction and shopping it around. I had a breakthrough today that I think might get a piece that I like, but nobody wants to print, published.

That’s it for now, I guess. The third page of Death’s Children is up too, I’ll probably upload the last on before I leave Halifax. I think I’ll pop up in the next couple of days to tell you all about the webcomics I discovered in the past year too. LOOK FORWARD TO IT!

A Deeper Shade of Gone

Filed under: site shit..., comics, writing, disorganized mess — Brendan @ 10:06 am

GONE!

Okay, so I didn’t get it done yesterday. Here’s the update, though. I’ve decided that Shamus is taking too long to get me the last pages of that story he’s drawing, so I’m just going to go ahead and post the next one.

Death’s Children is written by me and drawn by John Muth. I’ll have regular weekly updates until it’s all posted (four pages means four weeks), and I’ll get the rest of the pages of The Time Traveller posted as I get them.

A letter from Lucius

Filed under: writing, pieces, disorganized mess — Brendan @ 11:50 am

My goal today was to write something that I liked well enough to post here. I hid in a coffee shop until that happened. Results are below the cut. It’s a little piece of the novel I’m writing, and it’s based loosely on a dream I had last night.

What?

Filed under: writing, news — Brendan @ 10:35 pm

So, here’s a question. A question that probably has an easy answer that I’m missing. Whatever, nobody reads this anyway, so nobody can tell that I’m an idiot.

Who the fuck decided that “dammit” is a word? I can understand the need to contract “Damn it” to a single word, that’s cool. But dropping the n? For serious? Come on.

Worrying about things like that is how I avoid doing work. I’m pounding out words on the novel (which has no name yet, although I’ve considered things like “Juggernauts”, “No God Here” and “The Path Outward”) and doing a final edit on Hallowed, whichever feels more like something that I shouldn’t be doing at the time.

I could put off work for a little bit longer if I sent out some submissions, couldn’t I?

Interactive fiction

Filed under: writing, the future, A thought, Interactive fiction — Brendan @ 3:13 pm

I keep forgetting about and coming back to interactive fiction. Well, I never really forget about it, since it’s how I learned to read, and when i was smaller I wrote thousands and thousands of words for various AGT games. Hell, when I’ve got a little bit of free time I might write some now. We’ll see about that.

Anyway, the main point of all of this, I’ve been playing this, and it’s the bee’s knees. I owe Shamus for the link, I suppose.

The most frustrating thing…

Filed under: writing, pieces, A thought — Brendan @ 8:46 pm

If you’ve ever written a novel, you’ll know about this. It’s when you get to the point where you can work all day, then look at what you’ve done, and it makes next to no difference against what you already have done, and it’s barely scratching the surface of what’s left.

Look at this, though:

Unprecedented Productivity Strikes Local Writer

Filed under: comics, writing, crazy guy, news, disorganized mess — Brendan @ 11:19 pm

So, I just finished the first typed draft (meaning the second draft, but the first I’ll ever show someone) of Hallowed. The whole goddamned thing. Holy shit. It will still be a while before the likes of you has a chance to read it, unless you’re unlucky enough to be in my reading team. Of course, even they don’t all read it.

Whatever, though. Here’s a list of what I still need to do:

  • Find an artist
  • Figure out how to write a treatment
  • Trick the artist into producing a few pages for the treatment
  • Write a treatment
  • Perform oral sex on the editorial staff of one or more comic publishers
  • Howl my wordless anguish at the sky
  • Choke the living shit out of the artist for being a flaky artist
  • Profit (a very small profit, barely worth mentioning, really)
  • If you’re an artist who wants a piece of Hallowed, or perhaps a member of the editorial staff of a comic company who wants oral sex, email me.

I’ve got time for a little bit more work related news.

The novel is happening! Seriously. I’m surprised at how much I’m writing, and how real it feels. Creeps me out, really.

Gone is grinding along. Why don’t we all stab Shamus, for not being a little quicker with that. Hell, I’ve got work from other artists waiting in the wings for Shamus to hurry up. Seriously, dude.

There’s a new project! A magazine type thing, which will happen as my credit limit allows in the real world. I think I may have to self publish, on account of it being three shades of batshit insane. On the bright side, I think it will probably make so little money that I won’t actually have to pay taxes for it. Sweeeet.

    Plodding along…

Filed under: comics, writing, the future — Brendan @ 10:13 pm

Just another work update, I guess. I’m through having nervous breakdowns because I need a smoke, I’m in the pacing back and forth because I can’t concentrate stage. I’m almost completely uninterested in working on Hallowed right now, which frequently happens when I’m nearly finished with something. Instead I’ve been stoking new life into old projects, and pacing around a novel that I’ve been thinking about for a long time.

Conclusions? A story I posted here a while back has potential, so it’s been taken down, and the novel’s going to be a real thing. I’m collaborating with my long time friend Dave on the novel. I’ll post some kind of a link for him when I convince him that it’s time to stop living in the early nineties and he should start finding time for things like email. I’ll slap up a piece of the novel here and there to keep you interested.

Also, I added a link to Facebook over there, because I’ve got this macabre fascination with showing the world how few friends I have.
